What is Emotional Intelligence and why is it so important in today’s workplace?

In today’s fast-paced and interconnected world, emotional intelligence has become a crucial skill in the workplace. That’s why I’m thrilled to announce the addition of this new course to my training portfolio!

What is Emotional Intelligence, and why is it so important?

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognise, understand, manage, and influence one’s own emotions and the emotions of others. The concept was popularised by Daniel Goleman in his 1995 book “Emotional Intelligence,” which built on the foundational research of psychologists Peter Salovey and John D.Mayer.

Emotional Intelligence is typically broken down into five key components:

    1. Self-Awareness: Recognising and understanding your own emotions
    2. Self-Regulation: Managing your emotions in healthy ways
    3. Motivation: Using your emotions to stay focused on goals
    4. Empathy: Understanding other people’s emotions
    5. Social Skills: Handling relationships effectively.

    Emotional Intelligence is increasingly vital in today’s workplace for several reasons, including;

    • Complex Interactions: Modern workplaces involve diverse teams and complex interactions. Emotional Intelligence helps in understanding and navigating these dynamics effectively.
    • Remote Work: With the rise of remote work, emotional cues are harder to read. Emotional Intelligence aids in maintaining strong communication and relationships even from a distance.

Over the years I often referred to Emotional Intelligence as part of the leadership training or coaching that I provided. I was absolutely thrilled when my client MFMac approached me to create a course on ‘Emotional Intelligence’ for all levels of staff within their organisation. I see this as a fantastic opportunity to extend that support to a wider audience by offering a dedicated course.

The great thing about Emotional Intelligence, often referred to as EQ (Emotional Quotient), is that you can increase your EQ. Unlike IQ (Intelligence Quotient) where it is a set level.  You can (if you are willing to😊) increase your EQ through developing self-awareness and choosing to adapt your behaviour.

The benefits of Emotional Intelligence include:

    • Better Relationships: Emotional Intelligence helps us connect and communicate effectively
    • Improved Decision-Making: Manage emotions to make better choices
    • Resilience: Emotional Intelligence equips individuals with the tools to manage stress and maintain mental well-being
    • Leadership: Emotional Intelligence is crucial for understanding team members’ needs and fostering a positive work culture
    • Conflict Resolution: Emotional Intelligence helps in resolving conflicts amicably by understanding different perspectives and finding common ground.
